The short answer

List the buyer questions that matter, ask them on several AI platforms, and record every source each answer cites. Mark the sources that mention a competitor but not you. Those are your citation gaps. Rank them by how often they appear and how relevant they are. Then decide, source by source, whether to pitch, list, review or publish.

  • A citation gap is a source AI answers rely on that features competitors but not you.
  • You find gaps by asking the same buyer prompts repeatedly and logging every cited source.
  • Sources cited across many prompts and platforms are usually the best place to start.
  • Some gaps, like a competitor's own blog, cannot be closed; answer them with your own content.

What is a citation gap?

A citation is a source an AI answer links to or names. Perplexity shows these openly, and ChatGPT and Gemini often do too.

A citation gap is a cited source that mentions your competitors but not you. If AI keeps reading that page, it keeps learning about them instead of you.

Typical gap sources include review sites, directories, comparison articles, forums, news pieces and industry associations.

How to find citation gaps by hand

You need a spreadsheet, a few hours, and access to the AI platforms your buyers use.

  1. 1

    Choose your buyer prompts

Write 10 to 25 questions a buyer would ask before choosing a provider like you. Leave your brand name out.

  2. 2

    Pick your competitors

Choose the three brands you lose deals to most often. Note every spelling of their names.

  3. 3

Ask each prompt on each platform

Use ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity at least. Use a fresh or logged-out session so past chats do not skew answers.

  4. 4

    Log every cited source

Record the prompt, platform, date and each cited URL. Capture the domain and the specific page.

  5. 5

    Tag who each source mentions

Open each page. Note whether it mentions you, each competitor, both or neither.

  6. 6

    Count and sort

Count how many prompts and platforms cite each source. Sort the gaps by that count.

  7. 7

    Repeat over several weeks

AI answers vary between runs. Repeat the process weekly or monthly to separate patterns from noise.

How to decide which gaps to close first

Not every gap is worth chasing. Score each one on four questions.

  • Frequency: is it cited across many prompts and platforms?
  • Relevance: do your real buyers read it?
  • Feasibility: can you realistically get listed, reviewed or mentioned there?
  • Effort: is the fix a form to fill in, or months of outreach?

Start with frequent, relevant sources you can fix in a day, like directories and review profiles.

How to check it worked

After four to eight weeks, re-run the same prompts on the same platforms. Keep the wording identical.

Check two things. Does the source now mention you? Do the answers that cite it now mention you too?

Look at trends over several runs, not single answers. No action guarantees a citation or a recommendation.

WebValet Pro is built for this job. It asks your tracked prompts weekly and shows sources that cite competitors but not you. These tracking features are rolling out during early access.

Common citation gap mistakes

These waste the most time.

  • Chasing every domain instead of the few that recur.
  • Running the check once and treating it as final.
  • Buying links or paid mentions without a clear sponsored label.
  • Posting promotional replies in forums, which usually backfires.
  • Confusing normal search rankings with sources AI answers actually cite.

Questions people ask

How is a citation gap different from a backlink gap?

A backlink gap compares which sites link to competitors. A citation gap looks only at sources AI answers actually use. The two overlap, but citations include unlinked mentions and review pages.

How many prompts do I need?

Ten to 25 well-chosen buyer prompts is a practical start. Fewer prompts make patterns hard to see. Many more become hard to review by hand.

Can I pay to be cited by AI answers?

No AI platform sells organic citations. You can pay for some directory listings or sponsored articles. Label them clearly and judge them on audience value.

Does WebValet find citation gaps automatically?
