The short answer
Fix a set of buyer prompts, AI platforms and competitors. Ask every prompt on every platform on a regular schedule and record which brands each answer mentions. Share of voice is your mentions divided by all tracked brand mentions, as a percentage. Track it over several weeks, and report mentions, citations and answer position separately.
- AI share of voice compares how often answers mention you against tracked competitors.
- It only means something with a fixed prompt set, fixed platforms and a fixed competitor list.
- Single runs are noisy; trends over several weeks are what count.
- Report mention share, mention rate and citations as separate numbers.
What does AI share of voice mean?
Share of voice is a marketing term for your slice of the conversation in your category. In AI search, the conversation is the answers AI assistants give.
AI share of voice measures how often those answers mention your brand compared with competitors. It is calculated across a fixed set of buyer prompts.
Tools define it slightly differently. Always check whether a number counts mentions, citations or recommendations.
Think of it as asking a well-read adviser the same questions every week. You count how often they name each brand.
How to measure AI share of voice, step by step
You can do this in a spreadsheet. It gets tedious quickly, which is why many teams automate it.
- 1
Fix your prompt set
Use 20 to 25 unbranded buyer prompts. Keep the exact wording from week to week.
- 2
Fix your platforms
Choose the AI platforms your buyers use, such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Use fresh sessions each time.
- 3
Fix your competitor list
Pick three to five competitors. List every name variant, like Example Co and ExampleCo.
- 4
Run on a schedule
Ask every prompt on every platform weekly. Save the full answer text, not just a yes or no.
- 5
Extract mentions and citations
For each answer, note which brands appear, in what order, and which sources are cited.
- 6
Calculate the numbers
Divide your mentions by total mentions of all tracked brands. Also calculate your mention rate per answer.
- 7
Average over time
Use a rolling four-week average. It smooths out the natural variation between runs.
The share of voice formula, with a worked example
The numbers below are made up to show the method. They are not benchmarks.
Notice that share of voice and mention rate differ. Share compares you with rivals. Rate shows how often you appear at all.
Share of voice = your mentions / mentions of all tracked brands x 100 Mention rate = answers mentioning you / total answers x 100 Illustrative example: 25 prompts x 3 platforms = 75 answers Your brand 18 mentions Competitor A 30 mentions Competitor B 24 mentions Competitor C 18 mentions Total 90 mentions Share of voice = 18 / 90 x 100 = 20% Mention rate = 18 / 75 x 100 = 24%
How to read the numbers without fooling yourself
AI answers change between runs, even for the same prompt. Read results with that in mind.
- Look at trends over four weeks or more, not one run.
- Split results by platform. You may be strong in one and absent in another.
- Split by prompt type. Comparison prompts often behave differently from discovery prompts.
- Check the tone. A mention that warns buyers away is not a win.
- Note your position. Being named first differs from being named fifth.
- Watch for new names. A rising newcomer can take share from everyone you track.
How to check your measurement is working
Run the same set twice in one week. The two results should be broadly similar. Big swings mean your sample is too small.
Spot-check a few answers by hand each month. Make sure name variants and misspellings are being counted.
If a competitor jumps overnight, read the answers. A name clash with an unrelated company can cause false matches.
Each week, WebValet Pro measures brand mentions, citations and share of voice across 25 prompts. It covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It is rolling out during early access. Claude and Google AI Overviews are paid add-ons.
Common share of voice mistakes
Avoid these and your numbers will mean something.
- Counting branded prompts, which inflates your share.
- Changing prompts or competitors midway and comparing old with new.
- Comparing numbers from two tools that define the metric differently.
- Ignoring negative or inaccurate mentions.
- Reporting a single run as a result.
- Tracking so many competitors that every share looks tiny.
Questions people ask
What is a good AI share of voice?
There is no universal benchmark. It depends on how many competitors you track and how crowded your category is. Focus on your own trend and the gap to your closest rival.
Is AI share of voice the same as SEO share of voice?
No. SEO share of voice usually estimates your slice of search clicks or rankings. AI share of voice counts mentions inside AI-generated answers.
How often should I measure it?
Weekly works well. Answers change often, and weekly data gives enough points to see a trend within a couple of months.
Do citations count toward share of voice?
Keep them separate. A mention means the answer names you. A citation means it links to or names your website as a source.
