How Microsoft Copilot finds and recommends brands

The short answer

Microsoft Copilot answers questions in Windows, Edge, Bing and its own apps. When it needs fresh facts, it grounds answers in the Bing search index, crawled by Bingbot. So being visible in Copilot starts with being indexed well in Bing. Use Bing Webmaster Tools, submit a sitemap, and keep facts consistent. WebValet does not track Copilot.

  • Copilot answers draw on the Bing index, which Bingbot crawls.
  • Many sites focus only on Google and neglect Bing, which can hurt Copilot visibility.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow help Bing find and refresh your pages.
  • WebValet does not track Copilot, so check it manually.

How does Copilot find information?

Copilot uses large language models to write answers. For current facts, it grounds them in Bing search results.

Grounding means building the answer from pages found in a live search. It does not rely only on training.

That means the Bing index is the key source. Bingbot is the crawler that builds it, and Bing's own rules decide what gets indexed.

Copilot appears in several places, from Bing and Edge to Windows and Microsoft 365. Features differ between them and change often. Check Microsoft's documentation for current details.

What does Copilot tend to show?

Answers that use web search usually include citations linking to source pages. Some answers also show related searches or product and place cards.

Answers can vary between Copilot in Bing, the Copilot app and work versions. Treat each as a separate place to check.

Like other AI tools, Copilot may summarize what review sites and directories say about you. Wrong details there can carry into its answers.

Why Bing matters more than many owners think

Many businesses check Google carefully and never look at Bing. For Copilot, that is a blind spot.

A page can rank well on Google yet be missing or outdated in Bing. If so, Copilot has less to draw on when it describes you.

Bing's index also supports some other search products. So a little Bing housekeeping can pay off in more than one place.

Search your own brand on Bing once a month; it takes two minutes and catches indexing gaps early.

How to make your site readable for Copilot

Start with Bing itself. Allow Bingbot, and point it at your sitemap.

  • Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools; you can import it from Search Console.
  • Submit your sitemap and check Bing's indexing and crawl error reports.
  • Consider IndexNow, a protocol Bing supports for notifying it of new or changed pages.
  • Keep your business details consistent across directories and review sites.

How to check what Copilot says about your brand

Since WebValet does not cover Copilot, a manual routine is the best option.

  1. 1

    Check Bing first

Search your brand name on Bing. If your site is missing or outdated, fix indexing before anything else.

  2. 2

    Ask buyer questions

Open Copilot and ask five to ten buyer questions, such as the best estate agent in Bristol.

  3. 3

    Note the citations

Record who is named and which sources are linked. Note whether your own pages appear.

  4. 4

    Check analytics

In GA4, look for referrals from Bing and Copilot domains. Naming can vary, so check the referral list.

  5. 5

    Repeat monthly

Ask the same questions each month and compare. Look for patterns, not single answers.

Does WebValet track Microsoft Copilot?

No. WebValet does not track Copilot. Pro tracks ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, with Claude and Google AI Overviews as paid add-ons.

Many of the same improvements help across platforms, though. Clear pages, crawler access and trusted mentions support Copilot too. Pair those with the manual checks above.

WebValet's free check can still help indirectly. It reviews your robots.txt rules, structured data and page clarity, which matter for every crawler.

Questions people ask

Does WebValet track Copilot?

No. Copilot is not tracked today. Use the manual checks on this page, and make sure your site is indexed in Bing.

Is Copilot the same as ChatGPT?

No. They are separate products from different companies. Copilot grounds its answers in Bing, while ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's own index and partners.

Do I need Bing Webmaster Tools if I rank well on Google?

It is worth it. Bing has its own index, and Copilot relies on it. Setup is quick, especially if you import your site from Search Console.

What is IndexNow?

IndexNow is an open protocol that lets you tell search engines when a page is added, changed or removed. Bing supports it. Many CMS plugins can send these pings automatically.
