The short answer

A large language model (LLM) is an AI system trained on vast text collections to read and write language. It works by predicting the next piece of text, one small step at a time. LLMs power assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. They know about your business from training data, live web retrieval, or both.

  • An LLM learns patterns from large amounts of text, then predicts likely next words.
  • Its built-in knowledge stops at a training cutoff date.
  • Many AI assistants add live web search to give fresher answers with sources.
  • Answers vary between runs, so one response is a sample, not a verdict.
  • LLMs can state wrong facts confidently, which is called hallucination.

What is a large language model in plain words?

An LLM is a very advanced autocomplete. It has read a vast amount of text and learned how words, facts and ideas tend to fit together. Given a prompt, it writes the most fitting continuation.

Large refers to the size of the model and its training data. Language is what it works with. Model means it is a mathematical system, not a database of stored pages.

How does an LLM work?

Text is split into tokens, which are small chunks such as words or parts of words. During training, the model sees billions of examples and adjusts itself to predict the next token well.

After that, developers tune it to follow instructions and be helpful. Human feedback is often part of this step. The result is a model that can answer questions, summarize and write.

The model does not look facts up from memory like a spreadsheet. It reconstructs them from patterns. That is why well-documented facts come out reliably and obscure ones may not.

Which LLMs power the main AI assistants?

Assistants are products built on top of models. Here is a simple map, current at the time of writing.

Why do LLMs matter for a business?

Buyers now ask assistants for recommendations, comparisons and shortlists. The model's answer shapes which businesses they consider.

An LLM can learn about you in two ways. Training data gives it long-term knowledge from text across the web. Live retrieval lets it read current pages when someone asks. Both depend on clear, consistent information about you existing in the right places.

Answers are probabilistic. Ask the same question twice and you may get different brands. That is why tracking matters more than a single check.

One screenshot of an AI answer is an anecdote; the same prompt asked on a schedule is evidence.

How do you see what LLMs say about you?

Write down the questions real buyers ask, such as best accountant for small charities in Leeds. Ask them on several assistants and note who gets named and which sources appear. Repeat over weeks.

WebValet Pro does this for 25 tracked buyer prompts each week on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Claude and Google AI Overviews are paid add-ons. Tracking features are rolling out during early access.

What are the limits of LLMs?

Knowing the limits helps you read AI answers sensibly.

  • Built-in knowledge goes stale after the training cutoff.
  • They can hallucinate, stating false details with confidence.
  • They may blend similar businesses or old and new facts.
  • Output varies by wording, platform, location and time.
  • They tend to favor businesses that are widely and consistently described online.

Questions people ask

Is ChatGPT a large language model?

ChatGPT is a product built on OpenAI's large language models. The app adds features like web search, memory and file handling. People often use the two names loosely.

How do LLMs learn about my business?

Through training data that mentions you, and through live web retrieval when the assistant searches. Your website, profiles, reviews and press coverage all feed those sources. Clear, consistent facts help both routes.

Can I submit my business to an LLM?

There is no general submission form. You influence what models see by keeping your site crawlable and earning mentions on trusted sources. Nothing guarantees how a model will describe you.

What is a training cutoff?

It is the date after which a model has no built-in knowledge. Anything newer must come from live retrieval. An assistant without web search may not know about recent changes to your business.

Why do I get different answers each time?

LLMs generate text with some randomness, and search results change. Wording, location and account settings also matter. Repeated tracking shows the real pattern.
