What is retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)?

Also called: RAG

The short answer

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is a method where an AI system looks up relevant documents before writing its answer. It retrieves passages from an index or the web and adds them to the prompt. Then it writes a reply based on them. AI search tools use forms of it. That retrieval step is where your web pages can be found, used and cited.

  • RAG combines a search step with a language model that writes the answer.
  • It lets AI use fresh information that was not in its training data.
  • AI search tools that cite web sources rely on some form of retrieval.
  • Your pages can only be cited if they can be found, fetched and understood.
  • Clear, self-contained passages are easier to retrieve and quote accurately.

What does RAG mean in plain words?

Think of an open-book exam. A student who answers from memory may misremember. A student who checks the book first gives a better answer and can show where it came from.

RAG is the open-book version of AI. Before answering, the system searches for relevant material. It then writes the answer using what it found. The term comes from a 2020 research paper and is now widely used.

How does retrieval-augmented generation work?

Each product works differently, but the general flow looks like this.

  1. 1

    Understand the question

The system reads the user's prompt and may rewrite it into one or more search queries.

  2. 2

    Retrieve

It searches an index, which could be the web, a search engine or a private document store.

  3. 3

    Select passages

It ranks what it found and keeps the most relevant chunks of text.

  4. 4

    Augment the prompt

Those passages are added to the instructions the language model receives.

  5. 5

    Generate

The model writes an answer grounded in the passages, often with links to sources.

Why does RAG matter for a business?

When an AI answer cites web pages, retrieval decided which pages it saw. If your page was not retrieved, it could not be cited. That is true however good the page is.

This makes some old SEO basics newly important. Pages need to be crawlable and indexable. Important text must be in the HTML, not hidden behind scripts or logins.

It also changes how you write. Retrieval often works on passages, not whole pages. A paragraph that answers one question clearly stands a better chance of being used.

If an AI crawler cannot fetch your page, retrieval cannot find it, so check robots.txt and rendering first.

RAG vs training data: two ways AI knows about you

A language model can learn about your business in two different ways. Both matter.

Training dataRetrieval (RAG)
When it happensBefore the model is releasedAt the moment someone asks
How freshFixed at a cutoff dateAs fresh as the index it searches
Can cite sourcesNot reliablyYes, often with links
What you influenceYour long-term presence across the webCrawlable, clear pages and trusted sources

How do you check whether retrieval can find you?

Start with access. Check robots.txt rules for AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot. Then load your key pages with JavaScript turned off to see what plain HTML shows.

Next, look at which sources AI answers cite for your buyer questions. WebValet Pro records citations from ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for 25 tracked prompts each week. That shows which pages retrieval keeps choosing, yours or a competitor's.

Common mistakes that block retrieval

These issues stop a good page from ever entering the answer.

  • Blocking AI search crawlers in robots.txt by accident.
  • Loading key text only with client-side JavaScript.
  • Burying the answer deep in long, unstructured pages.
  • Putting facts like prices or service areas only in images or PDFs.
  • Leaving outdated pages live that contradict your current facts.

Questions people ask

Does ChatGPT use RAG?

When ChatGPT searches the web, it retrieves pages and cites them, which is a form of retrieval-augmented generation. Without search, it answers from what it learned in training. OpenAI does not publish every detail of its pipeline.

Is RAG the same as an AI search engine?

RAG is a technique, not a product. AI search engines like Perplexity use retrieval as part of how they work. Companies also use RAG inside private tools over their own documents.

How is RAG different from fine-tuning?

Fine-tuning changes the model itself by training it further on new examples. RAG leaves the model unchanged and feeds it relevant documents at question time. For fresh facts, retrieval is usually the simpler approach.

Does RAG stop AI hallucinations?

It reduces them but does not eliminate them. A model can still misread or misquote a source. If the retrieved source is wrong, the answer can be wrong too.
