The short answer

Google AI Overviews are AI summaries shown at the top of some Google results. They draw on Google's search index, so Googlebot and normal SEO matter. ChatGPT search is a feature inside ChatGPT that searches the web and cites sources. It relies on OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot index and search partners. Both reward clear, trusted content, but each needs its own crawler allowed.

  • AI Overviews live inside Google Search; ChatGPT search lives inside the ChatGPT app.
  • AI Overviews rely on Googlebot and Google's index; ChatGPT search relies on OAI-SearchBot and partners.
  • Google says no special markup is needed for AI Overviews; normal SEO best practice applies.
  • Both show source links, but buyers see them in very different settings.

How do AI Overviews and ChatGPT search work?

AI Overviews appear for some Google searches, above or among the usual results. Google generates them with a Gemini model built for Search. The summary links to pages from Google's index.

ChatGPT search runs inside a conversation. ChatGPT decides to search, or the user asks it to. It fetches results, writes an answer and cites sources inline.

One is a layer on a search engine. The other is a chat assistant that can search. That difference shapes how buyers use them.

A Google searcher often scans the overview, then clicks a result or moves on. A ChatGPT user may ask follow-ups, such as which option suits a small budget. Your brand needs to hold up across that whole conversation.

How to be visible in both

The shared foundations come first. Then check the crawler and reporting details for each.

  • Allow both Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, and check your CDN does not block them.
  • Put the direct answer to common questions near the top of each page.
  • Keep brand facts consistent across your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
  • Earn mentions on the review sites and comparison pages buyers in your niche read.
  • Avoid nosnippet on pages you want summarized, since it also limits AI Overviews.

Blocking GPTBot opts you out of OpenAI training, not ChatGPT search; OAI-SearchBot controls search.

How do you measure each one?

For AI Overviews, Search Console counts clicks and impressions within your normal web search totals. At the time of writing, it does not report them separately.

For ChatGPT, look in GA4 for referral traffic from chatgpt.com. ChatGPT often adds a utm_source tag to outbound links.

Neither report tells you when you were mentioned without a click. For that, you need to ask the questions yourself and record the answers.

Which one matters more for your business?

It depends on your buyers. Local and quick-intent searches still start on Google for many people. Longer research and comparisons often happen in chat tools.

You rarely need to choose. The same clear content and trusted mentions help in both. The main extra work is checking crawler access and tracking each separately.

WebValet Pro tracks ChatGPT, alongside Gemini and Perplexity. Google AI Overviews tracking is a paid add-on.

The verdict: different doors, same foundations

AI Overviews reward strong Google SEO. ChatGPT search rewards being in OpenAI's index and on sources it trusts.

Build the shared foundations once. Then make sure both crawlers can reach you, and check each answer surface on its own.

Expect both to keep changing. Re-check crawler rules and answers every month or so, rather than setting them once.

Questions people ask

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended controls use of your content for Gemini training and grounding. AI Overviews follow normal Search controls, such as nosnippet and Googlebot rules.

Does ChatGPT search use Bing?

OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers as well as its own index. Check OpenAI's current documentation for which providers.

Is there special markup for AI Overviews?

Google says no. Normal SEO best practice applies, including helpful content and valid structured data. There is no AI Overviews tag to add.

What about Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience from Google. It also builds on Google's index, so the same foundations apply. Features and availability change, so check Google's announcements.
