The short answer
AI Overviews are short, AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results. They answer the query directly and link to the web pages they drew from. Google says no special markup is needed to appear in them. Pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and normal SEO best practice applies.
- AI Overviews are Google's AI summaries shown above the usual results for some searches.
- They link to supporting pages, which can bring visibility even when clicks are fewer.
- Google says there is no special markup or file needed to be included.
- Google-Extended does not control AI Overviews; normal Search controls like nosnippet do.
- Results vary by location, device and time, so one manual check proves little.
What are AI Overviews in plain words?
You search Google and, before the blue links, a paragraph answers you. That paragraph is an AI Overview. It usually has small link cards or icons pointing to its sources.
Google tested the idea as the Search Generative Experience. It launched AI Overviews in the United States in May 2024 and has expanded them since. Google also offers AI Mode, a separate, more conversational search experience.
AI Overviews do not appear for every search. They show more often for questions and complex queries than for simple brand or navigation searches.
Why do AI Overviews matter for a business?
The overview sits above the organic results. Searchers may get what they need without scrolling. That can reduce clicks to pages that still rank well.
Being one of the linked sources is a new kind of visibility. Your brand or page appears inside the answer itself. For research-heavy buying decisions, that early exposure counts.
The sources an overview links to may differ from the top organic results. So ranking well and being cited are related, but not the same.
How do AI Overviews choose their sources?
Google uses its own search index and ranking systems to find pages that support the answer. Its model then writes a summary and attaches links.
Google's guidance is plain. Make pages crawlable, indexable and genuinely helpful. Put important content in text, not only in images or scripts. Keep structured data accurate to the visible page.
There is no AI Overviews tag or file. The same quality work that helps Search applies here.
What can you control about AI Overviews?
You control them with the same tools that govern snippets in Search. Google-Extended is a different thing. It affects Gemini training and grounding, not Search or AI Overviews.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| nosnippet meta tag | Stops Google showing text snippets from the page, including in AI Overviews. |
| data-nosnippet attribute | Keeps a specific part of a page out of snippets. |
| max-snippet meta tag | Limits how many characters Google may show as a snippet. |
| noindex | Removes the page from Google Search entirely. |
| Google-Extended in robots.txt | Affects Gemini use of content; does not affect AI Overviews. |
How do you measure visibility in AI Overviews?
Search Console counts clicks and impressions from AI features inside the normal Web search totals. At the time of writing it offers no separate AI Overviews filter. Check Google's docs, as this may change.
Manual checks are unreliable because answers vary by location, device and time. Tracking the same queries on a schedule gives a clearer picture.
WebValet offers Google AI Overviews tracking as a paid add-on to Pro. Pro itself includes ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, plus read-only Search Console and GA4. Tracking features are rolling out during early access.
Common mistakes with AI Overviews
Most mistakes come from treating AI Overviews as a separate system with secret rules.
- Blocking Google-Extended and expecting it to remove you from AI Overviews.
- Buying tools or markup that promise a special AI Overviews tag.
- Judging visibility from one search on your own logged-in browser.
- Ignoring pages that rank well but answer the question vaguely.
