The short answer
Use Search Console to see how Google Search, including its AI features, shows and sends visitors to your pages. At the time of writing, AI Overviews and AI Mode data sit inside the normal Performance report. Filter for long, question-style queries, watch pages where impressions rise but clicks fall, and fix indexing problems first.
- Search Console covers Google only, not ChatGPT, Perplexity or other assistants.
- AI Overviews data is mixed into the Web search results, with no separate filter at the time of writing.
- Regex filters help you isolate question-style and long queries.
- Pages that are not indexed cannot appear in Search or its AI features.
What does Search Console show about AI search?
Google Search Console is Google's free tool for site owners. It shows how often your pages appear in Search and how often people click.
Google says appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode count in the Performance report. They are included under the Web search type. At the time of writing, there is no filter that isolates them.
Google's help pages explain how positions and impressions are counted for these features. Read them before drawing firm conclusions, because the rules differ from classic results.
How to read Search Console for AI search, step by step
Set aside an hour for the first pass. Later reviews take less time.
- 1
Start with indexing
Open the Pages report and review why pages are not indexed. Fix important pages first, since unindexed pages cannot appear anywhere in Search.
- 2
Set a useful date range
In Performance, compare the last three months with the three months before. Short ranges are noisy and can mislead you.
- 3
Filter for question queries
Add a Query filter, choose Custom (regex), and paste the question pattern below. These queries are the ones most likely to trigger AI answers.
- 4
Filter for long queries
Swap in the long-query pattern below. Long, specific queries often look like the prompts people type into AI assistants.
- 5
Find pages where clicks fall but impressions hold
Sort pages by impressions, then compare click-through rate (CTR), the share of impressions that become clicks. A falling CTR may mean answers are shown directly on the results page.
- 6
Improve the answers on those pages
Make sure each page answers its main question clearly near the top. Add specific facts and keep the page up to date.
- 7
Record what you changed
Export the data and note the date of each change. You will need this to judge results later.
Regex filters for question and long queries
Search Console supports regular expressions in its Query and Page filters. A regular expression is a pattern for matching text. It uses the RE2 syntax.
Use one pattern at a time. Adjust the question words to fit how your buyers search.
# Question-style queries (Query filter > Custom (regex) > Matches regex)
^(who|what|when|where|why|how|which|is|are|can|does|do|should|best)\b
# Long queries of seven words or more
^(\S+\s+){6,}\S+$What Search Console cannot tell you
Search Console is essential, but it has clear limits for AI search. Plan to fill these gaps with other sources.
- Whether a specific impression came from an AI Overview or a classic result.
- Anything about ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or other assistants.
- Mentions of your brand that do not include a link to your site.
- Rare queries, which Google hides to protect user privacy.
- Microsoft Copilot, which draws on the Bing index; use Bing Webmaster Tools for Bing data.
How to check it worked
After you improve a page, wait four to eight weeks. Then rerun the same filters for that page and compare the same length of time.
Look for rising impressions on question queries and a steadier CTR. Changes in Search are gradual, so one week tells you little.
WebValet Pro connects to Search Console with read-only access and explains these trends in plain English. It places them next to weekly buyer prompt tracking on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. These tracking features are rolling out now.
Common mistakes with Search Console and AI search
Avoid these when reading your data.
- Assuming every drop in clicks is caused by AI Overviews.
- Comparing a holiday week with a normal week.
- Ignoring the Pages report and focusing only on Performance.
- Treating Search Console as a measure of ChatGPT or Perplexity visibility.
- Rewriting many pages at once, so you cannot tell what worked.
Questions people ask
Can I see AI Overviews traffic separately in Search Console?
Not at the time of writing. Google includes it in the Web search type with other results. Check Google's help pages, as reporting may change.
Why are my impressions up but clicks down?
There are several possible reasons. Answers shown on the results page can satisfy some searchers without a click. Ranking changes and seasonality can also cause it, so check those first.
Do I need Bing Webmaster Tools too?
It helps if Microsoft Copilot matters to you. Copilot answers draw on the Bing index, and Bing Webmaster Tools shows how Bing sees your site. It is free to set up.
Does WebValet need write access to Search Console?
No. WebValet Pro uses read-only access. It reads your data to explain trends and cannot change your Search Console settings.
