How Google AI Overviews find and recommend brands

The short answer

Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries at the top of some Google results. They are built from Google's search index, so Googlebot and normal SEO decide what they can use. Google says no special markup is needed. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Google-Extended does not affect AI Overviews.

  • AI Overviews draw on Google's search index, crawled by Googlebot.
  • There is no special AI Overviews markup; normal SEO best practice applies.
  • Snippet controls such as nosnippet also limit use in AI Overviews.
  • Search Console includes AI Overviews data in normal totals, not as a separate report.

How do AI Overviews find information?

AI Overviews are generated by a Gemini model customized for Google Search. The model works from pages in Google's index, not from a separate crawl.

Google describes running several related searches behind the scenes to build one overview. It then links to pages that support the summary.

To be eligible, a page must be indexed and allowed to show a snippet. Beyond that, Google says the usual ranking systems and quality signals apply.

What do AI Overviews tend to show?

An overview is a short summary with links to supporting pages. Links may appear as cards beside the text or inline.

Overviews appear only for some queries, and availability varies by country and language. Google also offers AI Mode, a separate conversational search. Both change often, so check Google's announcements.

For local queries, overviews may sit near map results. Your Google Business Profile and reviews can shape what buyers see around them.

Overviews can also cite forums, videos and review sites, not only business websites. Being discussed on those sources can matter too.

How to make your site readable for AI Overviews

There is nothing special to add. Make sure Googlebot can crawl your pages, and that you are not limiting snippets by accident.

Check that main content loads in the HTML Google renders. Text hidden behind tabs that need clicks or heavy scripts may be missed.

  • Fix indexing issues shown in Search Console's page indexing report.
  • Answer the main question near the top of each page, in plain words.
  • Use valid structured data in JSON-LD, Google's recommended format.
  • Show who wrote the content and why they are qualified, where relevant.

Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews; it only affects Gemini training and grounding.

How to check AI Overviews for your brand

Results depend on location and account, so check in a consistent way.

  1. 1

    Use a private window

Search in a private or incognito window to reduce personalization from your history.

  2. 2

    Search buyer questions

Try longer questions, such as how much does a kitchen extension cost in Leeds.

  3. 3

    Open the sources

Expand the overview and note which sites are linked, and whether yours is one.

  4. 4

    Check Search Console

Look for pages with rising impressions but falling clicks. That can hint at summaries answering the query.

Can you measure AI Overviews traffic?

Partly. At the time of writing, Search Console counts AI Overviews clicks and impressions within normal web search totals. It does not separate them.

So you cannot see AI Overviews traffic on its own in Google's tools. Manual checks or a tracking tool fill that gap.

Watch for patterns instead. Rising impressions with falling clicks on question-style queries can be one sign. It is a clue, not proof.

Does WebValet track Google AI Overviews?

Yes, as a paid add-on to Pro. Pro itself covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, plus your Search Console and GA4 data, read-only.

With the add-on, your tracked prompts are also checked for AI Overviews. WebValet is in early access, and tracking features are rolling out.

Pairing the two views helps. You can see if falling Google clicks line up with AI Overviews naming competitors.

Questions people ask

Is there special schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google says no special markup is needed. Valid structured data still helps Google understand your pages, as it does for normal search.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

You can limit snippets with nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet. These also limit how your page appears in normal results. Blocking Googlebot removes you from Search entirely.

Do FAQ rich results help with AI Overviews?

Since 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for a limited set of authoritative government and health sites. FAQ markup is still valid structured data. Clear question-and-answer content can still help readers and AI summaries.

Why does an AI Overview cite a competitor instead of me?

The overview draws on pages Google judges most helpful and relevant for that query. Compare the cited page with yours: depth, clarity, freshness and trust signals. Improve your page, but expect no guaranteed outcome.
